Why the number of serious crimes in russia has surged to a record high
The number of serious crimes in russia has sharply increased. According to official data from the ministry of internal affairs, the first quarter of 2025 saw a record number of serious and especially serious crimes since the beginning of the so-called “special military operation” — 170,800 cases. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a 13.6% increase.
▫️ The main reason for this is the de facto encouragement of violence by the russian authorities, who exempt criminals from punishment, even during pretrial investigation, in exchange for signing a contract with the ministry of defense to participate in the “special military operation.”
▫️ Once such individuals return to civilian life, they often commit new crimes. The russian government tries to cover this up to avoid discrediting its so-called “heroes.”
Given the kremlin’s intention to continue its war against Ukraine and the significant decline in living standards within the country, the number of serious crimes in russia is expected to keep breaking records.
