War against Ukraine may lead to bread shortages in russia
The war against Ukraine, sanctions, and increased military spending have led to rising prices for basic food products in russia. Last year, prices hit a nine-year record and continue to grow. Wheat bread increased by 14.6% last year, and in the first five months of this year, it rose by more than 6%.
▫️To address the situation, the russian government is considering imposing price limits on bread. However, producers predict that this measure will lead to bankruptcies of bakeries and a reduction in the range of bread, particularly white bread, which is the most commonly purchased.
Other basic food products in russia are also facing problems—prices for vegetables, especially potatoes, have sharply risen, and russia has even been forced to import potatoes from China and Mongolia.
All of this points to a growing systemic crisis in russia’s agricultural sector. russian authorities are simulating actions to overcome the signs of this crisis, but in reality, the primary task of the government is to ensure the continuation of the war against Ukraine, often at the expense of ordinary russians.
