The hacking group Storm-2945, which is linked to russian intelligence, has targeted hotel Wi-Fi networks around the world to steal user credentials, gain access to cloud services, and compromise users’ devices.
The new cyber threat was reported by Microsoft. According to the company’s researchers, the attackers use phishing pages and manipulate public Wi-Fi networks, including captive portal authentication systems.
Users are advised to avoid suspicious Wi-Fi networks, verify the authenticity of login pages, and enable multi-factor authentication. Experts warn that similar attacks pose a risk to any organization using captive portal networks, including airports, universities, and healthcare facilities.
Cyber operations conducted by russian-linked hacking groups remain one of the kremlin’s key intelligence-gathering tools. The Center previously reported on a large-scale campaign by russian hackers aimed at stealing access to Signal and WhatsApp accounts.
The exploitation of public Wi-Fi networks once again highlights the importance of practicing good cyber hygiene and protecting personal data.
