russia recruits Peruvians for the war under the guise of “jobs”
The kremlin continues to recruit mercenaries from countries of the Global South for the war against Ukraine.
In particular, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the deaths of 11 Peruvian citizens who joined the russian army. Another 114 Peruvians are considered missing, while three have been captured by Ukrainian forces.
Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged its citizens not to accept fake job offers that may serve as a cover for criminal networks.
There have been numerous reports of russia using disinformation to recruit foreign nationals into its army, promising them large sums of money, russian citizenship, and easy military service. The Center has also detailed how russia wages war using foreign manpower and which countries are the main sources of mercenaries for its war.
By recruiting mercenaries from countries of the Global South, the kremlin seeks to compensate for the enormous losses suffered by the russian army on the battlefield.
