russia has started to rewriting history in the CIS countries
russia is taking historical revisionism to a new level, now exerting pressure on CIS countries. russian minister of education sergey kravtsov stated there are “problems” in the history textbooks of CIS countries.
▫️ Specifically, moscow is dissatisfied that the description of the soviet past in these textbooks has a “negative character.” Therefore, negotiations are already underway with relevant ministers to “coordinate a unified approach to interpreting the common past.”
▫️ In diplomatic terms, this means an attempt to impose a version of history favorable to kremlin on other countries. The war in Ukraine has triggered a massive wave of historical censorship within russia itself. Now, moscow is trying to extend this policy to other states, cloaking it with slogans about a “unified educational space” and “mental unity of Eurasia.”
In reality, for moscow, “common history” is a geopolitical tool to keep former soviet republics within its sphere of influence. russia understands it risks losing this leverage. After all, the russian federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine has opened the eyes of many CIS countries to what the “russian world” truly is.
