How traffic violators in Russia will be forced to pay for war with Ukraine
The Russian government is exploring new ways to take money from its citizens to fund the war. Previously, fines for traffic violations were kept in regional budgets, but starting from the new year, a quarter of these funds will be redirected to the federal budget, to be spent on the war with Ukraine. At the same time, the fines themselves are being increased.
While the funds raised from fines are minimal in the context of Russia’s massive military budget, they represent significant sums for regional budgets that could be used for the development of cities and villages. However, for Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, the interests of his own citizens are not a priority.
