How Russia propagates war through cinema
The Russian Ministry of Culture has approved a list of priority topics for films that will receive state financial support in 2025. The list includes films about war, “Russian traditional values,” and the “foreign policy victories of the Russian Federation.”
The Russian authorities aim to embed themes of war and the glorification of Russia’s “special path” into all cultural content available to its population. Promoting the production of such films is part of the Kremlin’s broader strategy to militarize society and foster hatred toward Ukrainians and the West.
▫️ This approach also allows the Kremlin to tighten its grip on the film industry, turning it into an instrument of state propaganda.
Previously, the Center reported that Russian dictator Putin’s administration had developed a program to reshape public attitudes toward the war using art as a propaganda tool.
