How Russia imposes the cult of war on schoolchildren through cinema
The russian ministry of education has published a list of over 400 films recommended for schoolchildren. Notably, 88% of the list consists of soviet-era films that align ideologically with today’s state propaganda in russia.
▫️ A significant portion of the list — especially for middle and high school students — includes films about wars and armed conflicts. While most are soviet films about World War II, some are recent propaganda pieces about Ukraine. At the same time, russian officials have lost any sense of restraint, recommending films that contain violent scenes and carry an 18+ age rating.
This type of propaganda is yet another stage in the militarization of russian society. By glorifying warfare and imposing a “correct” version of historical events, the russian government seeks to instill a worldview in children that serves the kremlin’s interests. The goal is to raise an entire generation of russians for whom war is perceived as normal.
