How putin is preparing russian businesses for permanent sanctions
At the congress of the russian union of industrialists and entrepreneurs, which is known in russia as the “oligarchs’ trade union,” kremlin leader vladimir putin stated that the numerous Western sanctions are not a temporary phenomenon.
At the same time, putin attempted to deflect responsibility for the sanctions that are crippling russia’s economy by portraying them as a source of pride. He insisted that the restrictions are merely “an attempt by the West to strategically weaken russia” rather than a response to the kremlin’s aggressive policies. Furthermore, putin told business leaders that “things will never be the same again.”
With this rhetoric, putin is sending a clear message to russian businesses: the economic freedoms they once had before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine are gone for good. As a result, russian businesses have no choice but to accept this reality, adapt to working under economic isolation, and continue paying for putin’s war.
