Due to the war against Ukraine, the kremlin is losing its ability to export fuel
russia is experiencing a significant decline in fuel exports. In February 2025, diesel exports to Africa dropped nearly by half—from 1.27 million tons to 684,000 tons. Exports to Brazil fell by more than 40%, and shipments to other Latin American countries have almost ceased. Overall, russia’s seaborne fuel exports plummeted by 15%.
The primary reason for this collapse is the so-called “unscheduled maintenance” at oil refineries, which have been damaged by drone strikes. Additionally, sanctions and the need to prioritize fuel supplies for russian troops in Ukraine are contributing factors.
By prolonging its war of aggression against Ukraine, the kremlin is pushing russia’s economy further into a deep crisis.
