Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will not personally attend the BRICS summit in kazan, scheduled for October 22-24, citing medical reasons.

▫️ Despite Brazil being a founding member of BRICS and Lula da Silva’s planned meeting with russian dictator vladimir putin on the sidelines, the Brazilian President will only participate in the event online.

▫️ Lula da Silva’s refusal to attend in person could signal further waning interest among moscow’s potential partners in BRICS cooperation. The Center has previously reported that the President of Indonesia and the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia have also declined to attend, and Kazakhstan has refused to join BRICS.

Earlier, Lula da Silva could not guarantee that putin would avoid arrest under an ICC warrant in Brazil during the G-20 summit, which led to the russian dictator canceling his visit.

The kremlin has been attempting to transform BRICS into a new political center of influence to unite Global South nations against the West. However, the cautious stance of many countries towards deeper integration with BRICS and closer ties with russia is undermining these plans.
