Occupiers lie about the cleanup of the Kerch Strait oil spill
Fuel oil pollution from tankers that sank back in December 2024 has been detected again in the Kerch Strait. Meanwhile, the occupiers are reporting the “final cleanup” of the accident’s aftermath.
▫️ According to satellite imagery, fuel oil slicks reappeared on August 20 and 25 this year in the area where the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers sank. Oil products are being carried by currents and wind in southwestern and southeastern directions.
▫️ Notably, just one day later, on August 21, an russian government commission reported the “complete removal of fuel oil,” while russia’s ministry of transport claimed that the coastline was supposedly clean.
▫️ Almost two years have passed since the disaster in December 2024, yet the russians have not even attempted to raise the tankers’ wreckage from the seabed. Despite the occupiers’ claims that the situation is under control, oil products continue to pollute the Black Sea waters.
The situation surrounding the sunken tankers is a clear illustration of how russia treats the territories it has seized: it has no regard for the environment of the occupied peninsula. Crimea interests the kremlin solely as a resource for pursuing its political and military objectives.
