Fake about the conditions of detention of russian prisoners of war in Ukraine
The Center notes the continuation of russia’s disinformation campaign concerning prisoners of war. Its goal is to create a false impression that russia treats Ukrainian prisoners better than Ukraine treats russian prisoners.
▫️ In particular, russia’s ombudswoman for human rights yulia lantratova claimed that Ukraine allegedly has detention facilities for russian prisoners of war where representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross are denied access. According to her, russian servicemen allegedly enter “official” Ukrainian captivity only after spending a prolonged period in “torture chambers.” She provided no evidence to support these claims.
▫️ Independent international and human rights organizations document the treatment of russian prisoners of war in Ukraine and monitor compliance with their rights. However, russian propaganda seeks to replace facts with fabrications.
▫️ At the same time, the UN and international human rights organizations have repeatedly documented systematic cases of torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war in russian captivity.
▫️ According to Bohdan Okhrimenko, Head of the Secretariat of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, russia has handed over to Ukraine the bodies of 375 Ukrainian prisoners of war showing signs of torture, physical exhaustion, and lack of adequate medical care.
