russian propaganda media have been promoting a touching story about an 11-year-old boy from occupied Donetsk who, together with his father, delivers water to local residents left without access to water. Propagandists present this as an example of “child heroism.”
▫️ But the entire media narrative raises a simple, logical question: how did it come to be that the main city of a major industrial region has no water?
The humanitarian crisis — including the ongoing water shortages — is a direct consequence of the occupation of Donetsk and the war. Many infrastructure facilities were destroyed by russian forces during hostilities, and even more have deteriorated over the 11 years of occupation and neglect by Russia’s appointed local authorities.
Instead of offering real solutions to meet even the basic needs of residents in the temporarily occupied territories, russia pushes stories of child “volunteering.” The story of the boy from Donetsk is not so much about heroism as it is about the disaster that the occupiers have inflicted on what was once a thriving city.
