The interest of the DPRK in sending troops to the russian-Ukrainian war
There is growing evidence of the presence of North Korean military personnel at training grounds in russia. According to Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, DPRK military forces may soon be deployed to the kursk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine has information regarding the preparation of two brigades, each consisting of 6,000 DPRK soldiers.
▫️ Andriy Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation and officer of Ukraine’s Defense Forces, explained that North Korea’s primary objective in sending troops to russia is to provide them with experience in real combat conditions.
“For the DPRK, sending military support to russia is not only a way to profit but also an opportunity to train their soldiers in modern warfare, preparing them for future confrontations with South Korea. Deploying troops to kursk and participating in battles there will be the first stage of this testing,” he said.
▫️ Andriy Kovalenko further noted that North Korean soldiers in regions bordering Ukraine could be used both for combat and for building fortifications, helping to relieve pressure on russian infantry.
Currently, there are 12,000 DPRK troops in russia, including 1,500 special forces.
