russia’s talk of “protecting Russian speakers” in the Baltics is alarming
russia has actively begun talking about the need to “protect russian-speaking populations” in the Baltic states following Latvia’s decision to deport more than 800 russians who failed the Latvian language exam.
▫️ state duma speaker vyacheslav volodin claimed that “russian speakers are suffering humiliation and oppression,” and therefore must be “protected.” Meanwhile, ldpr party leader leonid slutskiy promised to accept all “oppressed” russians deported from Latvia, calling them “part of the ‘russian world.’”
▫️ This rhetoric is not accidental. The “protection of russian speakers” formula was already used by russia as a pretext for military aggression against Ukraine in 2014. Back then, the kremlin similarly created an information background, accusing Ukraine of “oppressing” russian-speaking citizens to justify the war and occupation of Ukrainian territories.
Now this scenario is being repeated in relation to the Baltic states. Such statements should be viewed as part of a systemic information campaign. At the same time, russian information pressure on Baltic countries is intensifying through threats and accusations of “aggressive behavior toward russia.” These messages are laying the groundwork for future provocations and justifying hybrid actions.
