russia uses gaming platforms to recruit foreigners for the war against Ukraine
According to media reports, in July 2024 two young South African citizens went to fight on the side of the russian federation after communicating with a recruiter on Discord while playing Arma 3. They were promised money, russian citizenship, and education. Just a few weeks after signing a contract near st. petersburg, one of them was killed in the Luhansk region.
▫️ The gaming industry has become a tool of russian propaganda and recruitment, particularly in Africa. Games such as L’Aube Africaine and the African Dawn mod for Hearts of Iron IV, created with the support of the “African Initiative,” are being promoted to local audiences. In these projects, russia is portrayed as a “liberator” from colonialism, Western countries as enemies, and the wagner PMC is romanticized and legitimized.
▫️ Loyal bloggers and streamers, such as grishaputin, are involved in these campaigns, while simultaneously raising funds for the russian army. As the mod creators themselves note, “games are the most effective way to communicate with youth in Africa.” Through gaming communities, players are pushed toward the idea of “heroic participation” in the war, presenting real combat as the “next level” after the game.
moscow has built a transnational recruitment system based on deception and manipulation. Since 2022, russia has recruited more than 18,000 foreigners from 128 countries through fraudulent centers, private structures, and diplomatic and cultural channels. In this scheme, games are a cheap and cynical way to replenish manpower, disguising war as “digital entertainment.”
