How russia Leverages Cinema to Spread Its Propaganda
ru-propaganda is spreading information about expanding joint film production with certain foreign countries, presenting it as a victory over the “cancellation” of russian culture worldwide.
For russia, cinema—fully controlled by the state—has traditionally been a powerful propaganda tool. The russian Ministry of Culture has approved state funding for 2025 to support films about war, “russian traditional values,” and “russia’s foreign policy victories.” In reality, however, russian films are failing at the box office. By engaging in joint film production with foreign countries, russia seeks additional avenues to spread its propaganda abroad and boost its global influence.
The true goal of such cooperation is to shape public opinion in russia’s favor, justify its aggression against Ukraine, promote hostility toward Western countries, and strengthen its influence in the Global South.
