ChatGPT developer blocks russian disinformation network
OpenAI blocked a russian network that used ChatGPT to spread disinformation.
▫️In particular, operators based in russia primarily used ChatGPT to create posts and comments on social media platforms, including Substack, Telegram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn. The content was aimed at building an authoritative image for the self-proclaimed “expert community” — the International Berck Institute (IBI).
▫️The website of this “institute” published materials that often copied real academic research, mostly with false citations and attribution. Most importantly, IBI spread false information portraying russia in a way favorable to the kremlin.
The disinformation campaign reached a relatively small audience. However, the main risk lies not in the number of people reached, but in the infrastructure that was created.
This case demonstrates how influential actors can use artificial intelligence to build an authoritative image, conceal the origins of targeted narratives, and create information assets that can be scaled over time.
