Attack on Ukrainians in Wrocław: a wave of disinformation and manipulation

Manipulative attempts to justify the brutal attack on a Ukrainian couple in Wrocław are spreading across the Polish segment of social media.

▫️ False claims are being circulated suggesting that the incident was allegedly “provoked” by the victims themselves. Anti-Ukrainian information resources are exploiting the fact that the injured man was carrying a stun device, attempting to shift responsibility for the assault onto the Ukrainian victims.

This claim is false. As noted by the Polish fact-checking project Demagog, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław has officially dismissed the “provocation” narrative. Evidence collected during the investigation fully refutes claims that the Ukrainian couple instigated the attack. The man did indeed have a device with him (reportedly a flashlight with a built-in stun function), but he took it out only after the assault had begun and solely in self-defense.

▫️ The attackers knocked the stun device out of the victim’s hands and seized it. Police detained the suspects, who have been charged with assault and violence motivated by nationality.

Particular attention should also be paid to the reaction of russian propaganda. kremlin-controlled media immediately amplified the incident in Wrocław. They systematically highlight such cases, publish so-called “analytical” reports, and openly celebrate and praise any manifestation of anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland.

russia is the only party with a vested interest in worsening relations between Ukraine and Poland. It is not merely observing from the sidelines—it is actively conducting information operations aimed at fueling hostility between Ukrainians and Poles, as the Center has repeatedly documented.
