russia’s anti-migrant campaign: fake about an apartment for an Indian family
The Center has identified a continuation of russia’s information operation aimed at artificially fueling anti-migrant sentiment and xenophobia among Ukrainians.
A photo is circulating on social media allegedly showing a Ukrainian official and an Indian family with three children who supposedly received a three-room apartment in the Kyiv region. Posts claim that the family of Venkatesh Srinivasan has lived in Ukraine for “just over a year” and that the state-provided apartment has sparked “outrage and scandal” among the public.
In reality, this story is entirely fabricated. There are no references in the Ukrainian information space or official records to a family with that surname or to any transfer of housing to them. The image first appeared in russian sources. Analysis of the photo reveals signs of digital manipulation using artificial intelligence or graphic editing software.
The purpose of this disinformation campaign is to incite xenophobic sentiment, fuel social discontent, and artificially create tensions within Ukrainian society.
The Center has previously documented russian disinformation campaigns involving alleged “Indian migrants” in Ukraine. We urge everyone to practice good information hygiene, verify sources, and refrain from sharing manipulative content produced by the enemy.
