Fake anti-colonialism: how russia manipulates the history of the Global South

The kremlin continues to use the “anti-colonial” narrative to expand its geopolitical influence in countries of the Global South.

▫️ At a security forum in moscow, the russian military historical society opened an exhibition dedicated to “European slave trade and colonialism.” The organizers openly stated that the goal of the exhibition is to convince foreign visitors that cruelty is a “common feature of European policy” and to artificially equate the historical traumas of the Global South with the events experienced by the ussr during the Second World War.

▫️ Through such initiatives, the kremlin seeks to whitewash its own imperial history and portray itself as a “victim.” russia is also attempting to gain the loyalty of African and Latin American countries by manipulating historical narratives.

However, behind this propaganda lie moscow’s purely neo-colonial interests. The kremlin views the countries of the Global South solely as a means of circumventing sanctions and as a source of cheap resources. There is no genuine partnership in any supposed “struggle against colonialism.”
