OpenAI exposes russian propaganda network “Rybar”
OpenAI has exposed and shut down the russian network “Rybar,” which used ChatGPT for mass propaganda production.
The adversary employed artificial intelligence as a content factory to generate materials published under the “Rybar” brand, as well as through dozens of anonymous accounts on X and Telegram.
Operators used ChatGPT to create batches of short English-language comments, which were then posted from accounts posing as users from various countries.
Additionally, the network used AI to develop commercial plans for “Rybar” to conduct covert information campaigns in Africa, including interference in electoral processes and incitement of protests. The estimated budget for these campaigns reached $600,000 per year.
russia systematically uses artificial intelligence to scale propaganda operations. “Rybar” is only part of an industrialized disinformation system, where AI allows a single operator to manage dozens of fake accounts and generate hundreds of messages per day.
The kremlin uses AI to produce deepfake videos, write news, and mass-produce comments that simulate organic social media activity.
