russia continues to expand its intelligence activities in space, posing a threat to Europe’s satellite infrastructure, according to Michael Traut, Major General and head of the German Armed Forces Space Command.
◽️ The focus is on russian satellites Luch-1 and Luch-2, which have approached at least ten key European satellites. These satellites conduct SIGINT reconnaissance — the electronic collection and analysis of communication signals.
◽️ The EU satellites targeted by the russian spacecraft are primarily used for civilian purposes, including satellite television. At the same time, sensitive government and certain military communications, including those of NATO countries, are transmitted through these satellites.
russia’s activity in space is considered part of a broader hybrid war, which the kremlin increasingly uses as a tool to destabilize European Union countries.
Previously, the Center reported that the German government had already recorded systematic overflights of russian intelligence satellites, as well as attempts to jam signals.
