russia officially labels Western information technologies as “hostile”

In russia, smartphones, satellite internet, and Western IT services have been officially declared “security threats.”

▫️ At Infoforum-2026, dmitry gribkov, assistant secretary of the security council of the russian federation, stated that smartphones, satellite internet systems such as Starlink, email services, and other technologies of Western companies are allegedly used for “destructive information and technological influence” against russia. These provisions are already being incorporated into a new edition of the Information Security Doctrine.

▫️ This therefore goes beyond the rhetoric of an individual official and concerns a strategic policy document that will form the basis for future legislation and state programs. The Security Council openly formalizes a course toward so-called “information sovereignty,” which in practice means further restricting access to the global internet and to technologies not controlled by the kremlin.

The russian authorities no longer conceal their intention to dismantle the remaining elements of a free internet piece by piece, until russians are left with nothing but a kremlin-approved “whitelist” of digital resources.
