In russia, even the flagships of the military industry are cutting jobs
The russian corporation Uralvagonzavod has announced a 10% staff reduction. By February 2026, the company plans to downsize its metallurgical and railcar assembly production, as well as its administrative and support departments. Earlier, Uralvagonzavod had already reduced the workweek to four days in some divisions.
▫️ This enterprise is part of russia’s military-industrial complex — it produces T-90 tanks and other equipment for the army. The layoffs at Uralvagonzavod are yet another sign that the house of cards of russia’s war economy is starting to collapse.
After nearly four years of excessive strain and artificial “overheating,” the defense industry is no longer able to sustain such a pace. Even the factories prioritized by the kremlin for their role in the war are now being forced to cut costs and reduce staff.
