How russia uses international organizations to promote lies about “Ukrainian chemical weapons”

russia continues its campaign to discredit Ukraine internationally, including through the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). russia’s permanent representative to the OPCW, vladimir tarabrin, claimed to have submitted “compelling evidence” that Ukraine used “toxic chemicals.”

▫️ These accusations are based on “analysis confirmed by a certified lab of the russian ministry of defense,” which cannot be considered an objective source. russia is attempting to create the illusion of legitimacy by invoking international institutions. However, no independent body has confirmed any use of chemical weapons by Ukraine.

This is a textbook example of how russia exploits institutions of the civilized world — international organizations created to prevent war crimes — for political manipulation. Despite systematically violating international humanitarian law, including bans on chemical weapons, russia remains a member of the OPCW to use it as a platform for spreading false accusations against Ukraine.

As previously reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation, kremlin propaganda about alleged “Ukrainian chemical weapons” has intensified following UK sanctions against russia’s radiation, chemical, and biological defense command. Instead of facing accountability for its own crimes, russia is trying to shift the focus onto Ukraine.
