New tanker incident: russia continues to endanger the world

An ammonia leak occurred on a tanker that arrived at the port of ust-luga in russia. Although russian authorities describe the incident as “minor,” the mnister of transport rushed to the site, and the crew was evacuated.

This is already the fifth incident involving tankers linked to russia since the beginning of 2025. It is further evidence that the tanker fleet moscow actively uses to circumvent sanctions poses a direct threat not only to russia itself but also to the environment and the safety of other countries.

▫️Due to sanctions, russia lacks access to quality fleet maintenance, and the technical condition of the vessels is not being properly monitored. Under such conditions, explosions, toxic leaks, and tanker collisions have become routine occurrences for russia.

Nevertheless, russia continues to ignore these dangers, and the volume of shipments via its shadow fleet keeps growing. One of the consequences of these decisions was a fuel oil spill in the Kerch Strait in December 2024 — a large-scale accident that will negatively impact the region’s ecosystem for many years to come.
