How the Space for “Victory Frenzy” Is Shrinking in Post-Soviet Countries
Despite strong pressure from russia, former USSR countries are increasingly refusing to participate in pro-russian ideological events related to the celebration of Victory Day.
Kazakhstan has banned the “Immortal Regiment” march on May 9 — an event that russia sees as one of the tools for creating a unified ideological space of “victory descendants” around the world.
In addition to Kazakhstan, the “Immortal Regiment” march is also banned in Moldova, while in Uzbekistan it will be limited to the territory of a memorial complex.
The war against Ukraine has shown the world how russia uses the theme of the “great victory” in its information policy. As a result, even countries that maintain partnerships with russia are gradually distancing themselves from participating in events with openly pro-russian content.
