Why russian teachers are being sent to work in Asia, Africa, and Latin America

The “russian teacher abroad” project, overseen by the ministry of education of the russian federation, has rapidly expanded its presence in Global South countries. Officially, it aims to promote the russian language and culture abroad and allegedly to improve the quality of education in host countries. In reality, however, this project is a powerful tool for advancing the “russian world” and operates in tandem with branches of the russian orthodox church abroad. This is necessary for russia to increase the number of its allies on the international stage.

The project spans 29 countries of the Global South, including India, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Algeria, and Lebanon. By the end of 2024, more than 600 russian language teachers had participated in the project, working in 246 schools across these countries.

russia, using tools of “soft power” and hiding behind educational initiatives, is intensifying the spread of propaganda abroad, shaping a negative perception of the “collective West,” and promoting its self-proclaimed role as the defender of traditional values.
