russia ratifies strategic partnership treaty with Iran
The state duma of the russian federation has ratified the treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership between russia and Iran.
▫️The document includes commitments not to support a third party in the event of aggression against either country, strengthened cooperation in the field of defense and military-technical collaboration, joint efforts to combat “disinformation and negative propaganda,” and more.
russia claims that this treaty is a key element in maintaining “global stability,” but in reality, it primarily serves to secure greater support from Iran in the war against Ukraine. At the same time, the russian ministry of foreign affairs rushed to declare immediately after the ratification that the treaty does not oblige moscow to provide military support to Iran in the event of a U.S. military operation against that country.
▫️For Iran, russia may be useful as a friendly intermediary in dialogue with Western states and as a partner in mitigating the impact of economic sanctions through cooperation with another sanctioned country.
Despite the kremlin’s statements about readiness for a ceasefire, in reality, moscow is strengthening military cooperation with other sanctioned states, such as North Korea and Iran.
