A large disinformation campaign by russian intelligence uncovered in Austria
Austria’s Directorate of State Protection and Intelligence has uncovered a large-scale disinformation campaign in support of russia across German-speaking countries.
According to Austrian investigators, this covert campaign has been running since early 2022 and was coordinated from russian territory by russian intelligence services. A citizen of an Eastern European country has been detained — she documented the campaign’s progress and reported back to russian handlers.
The campaign aimed to shape public and political opinion against Ukraine and in favor of russia, as well as to discredit Ukraine’s political leadership. It involved the active spread of disinformation, fake news, and manipulative content. Another likely goal was to influence elections in Austria and contribute to political instability in the country.
