Why attending Maduro’s Inauguration is Important for Russia
Today in Caracas, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will be inaugurated for a new presidential term. This comes amid a challenging domestic political situation, marked by protests, allegations of election fraud, and repression of political opponents. The international context further heightens tensions, as the event draws attention from countries with strategic interests in the region, including Russia.
Russia will be represented at the ceremony by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, despite the invitation being addressed to Vladimir Putin personally. By doing so, Russia aims to maintain a formal level of participation while signaling its support for the Maduro regime. Putin’s absence may be tied to Venezuela’s status as a party to the Rome Statute, obliging it to act on the International Criminal Court’s warrant for Putin’s arrest.
Caracas remains a strategic partner for Moscow, benefiting from Russian economic aid, energy resources, and weapons. Through its alliance with Venezuela, Russia is attempting to establish a “platform” for geopolitical confrontation with the United States in Latin America, making Venezuela a key ally in the region.
