What Global South media write about Ukraine: India and Southeast Asia

▫️ In the Indian media, the main topics regarding Ukraine were the situation on the front line and India’s ability to contribute to a diplomatic resolution to the war.
▫️ Indian journalists highlighted a statement made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a major russian drone attack on Ukrainian cities on October 6. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of Ukraine being able to strike russian territory with long-range weapons.
▫️ A statement by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was also widely circulated, noting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of the few leaders capable of engaging with both Kyiv and moscow. He emphasized that “India could play a significant role in finding common ground between the two sides of the russian-Ukrainian war”.
▫️ Additionally, Indian media commented on how the war in Ukraine is influencing military tactics globally, particularly in the growing use of robotic systems and drones. They acknowledged that India remains “decades behind” in adopting these new trends.
▫️ With increased attention on the Middle East due to the anniversary of the Hamas invasion of Israel, Southeast Asian media outlets have also heightened their coverage of the war in Ukraine. In particular, they write about “different approaches of the United States to providing military assistance to Ukraine and Israel”.
