russia has taken up “regulating” artificial intelligence
The russian authorities have begun drafting a bill to regulate neural networks. The state duma has already formulated a definition of “artificial intelligence” and presents it as a step “to enhance citizens’ security.”
▫️ At the same time, conspiracy theories are being spread in the information space: for example, a statement by one russian official claiming that ChatGPT allegedly “transmits data to the Pentagon” has gained wide circulation. Such fabrications are meant to create an atmosphere of threat and justify new harsh restrictions.
▫️ In reality, this is yet another turn in tightening control. The russian authorities have simply found an area where restrictions do not yet exist and now want to “tighten the screws” there too. It is a logical continuation of existing restrictions: blocking calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, regular mobile internet shutdowns, and more.
moscow is building a “digital iron curtain.” Under the formal pretext of “personal data protection” or “national security,” the russian authorities are increasingly restricting their citizens’ access to information online, creating the conditions of a “digital concentration camp.”
