Over the past month, every seventh region of russia has experienced critical failures in the housing and utilities sector.
▫️ According to russian media estimates, since early January 2026, large-scale disruptions to heating, water supply, and power grids have been recorded in at least 12 localities, including major cities with populations over one million. At the peak of the New Year holidays, the number of incidents reached up to 26 per day, with more than 200 serious emergencies occurring in the first eight days of the year alone.
▫️ The authorities explain the situation by citing “abnormal weather” or “local technical malfunctions.” However, the underlying cause is far deeper: the chronic deterioration of infrastructure. A telling example is the Murmansk region, where the collapse of soviet-era power pylons left tens of thousands of people without electricity for three days.
The utilities collapse in russia’s regions increasingly demonstrates the destructive course chosen by the kremlin: instead of modernizing critical infrastructure for its own citizens, resources are being diverted to war and to the destruction of infrastructure in Ukraine.
