Iran’s propaganda: Mohammad Sarafraz
Mohammad Sarafraz – a propagandist promoting Iranian narratives on the international stage.
The Center continues its series on Iranian propaganda and its architects. One of the key figures is Mohammad Sarafraz, the former head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). He was appointed to this position in 2014 by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
▫️ Sarafraz played a key role in launching TV channels such as Press TV, HispanTV (Iran’s Spanish-language channel), and Al-Alam (Arabic-language channel), which have become tools for promoting Iranian narratives internationally.
▫️ Under his leadership, IRIB maintained a strong anti-Western and anti-Zionist stance, often airing content that accused the West of undermining Islamic governance and supporting Iran’s enemies. The network supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and broadcast material reinforcing Iranian influence in the Middle East, particularly through its backing of groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Sarafraz has also faced international criticism for his involvement in broadcasting forced confessions of political prisoners, which led to sanctions by the European Union.
