What’s wrong with lavrov’s statement about “protecting Africa’s interests”
During the closing of the russia-Africa ministerial conference, russian foreign minister sergey lavrov criticized Western countries, accusing them of allegedly “not wanting to act fairly” towards African states. He also claimed that relations between кussia and Africa “can serve as an example for the UN and the G20.”
▫️ However, кussia’s actions in Africa tell a different story, far from the narrative of equal partnership promoted by propagandists and politicians. In exchange for supporting local ruling elites, russia establishes direct control over the natural resources of African states. According to Western media, since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, russia has exported $2.5 billion worth of gold from Africa.
Beneath the anti-colonial rhetoric of the russian federation lies the pragmatic and self-serving agenda of the kremlin, aimed at mitigating the effects of Western sanctions on its economy.
