Tehran accuses Putin of lying: what it means for the Russia-Iran alliance
Iranian officials have denied Putin’s claim that Russians evacuated 4,000 Iranian soldiers from Syria.
▫️ Tehran clarified that the evacuation involved diplomats, not military personnel, and was conducted using Iranian aircraft. Furthermore, the number of evacuees was much smaller than Putin claimed and included advisors from other countries, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This highlights growing tensions between Iran and Russia. While Iran supports Russia in its war, Russia has been unable to effectively assist Iran in Syria, Lebanon, or Yemen. Additionally, Putin publicly blamed Iran for the defeat in Syria. The alliance between Moscow and Tehran is purely situational and exists only because it currently serves the interests of both regimes.
