These days, russia is “celebrating” the 25th anniversary of vladimir putin’s first election as president of the russian federation.
ru-propaganda presents these 25 years as a “new victorious era in russia’s history.” In reality, since May 2024, putin has been an illegitimate head of state.
▫️At that time, putin was “elected” for his fifth presidential term, with “voting” also conducted in the temporarily occupied territories (TOT) of Ukraine. This renders both the vote and the “elected” individual illegitimate.
The russian occupation of Ukrainian territories is not recognized by any civilized country in the world. Elections held in Ukraine’s TOT are a blatant violation not only of the Constitution and laws of Ukraine but also of the 1907 Hague Conventions, the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention, the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances related to Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the 1997 Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the russian federation, among other international legal instruments.
European countries have condemned these fake pseudo-elections. Relevant resolutions were adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the European Parliament. On May 8, 2024, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine passed a resolution emphasizing that the “election results” of the russian presidential vote are null and void and unlawfully conducted on Ukraine’s TOT. Therefore, the person “elected” in such “elections” is illegitimate.
▫️putin is currently serving his fifth presidential term and third in a row. To enable him to be re-elected after the end of his second term in 2008, the russian constitution was amended twice, including in 2020, to “reset” all previous presidential terms.
