The kremlin prepares legal justification for new military interventions
The russian state duma has passed in the first reading a bill expanding the grounds for military intervention. The document would allow vladimir putin to deploy troops to other countries to “protect russians” allegedly persecuted by foreign courts or tribunals.
▫️ The relevant committee of the state duma stated that the army is needed to “counter russophobia” and “protect russian organizations from encroachments.” In practice, this refers to arrests of russian state assets and the imposition of sanctions. In effect, putin would receive a carte blanche to deploy troops to any country whose justice system moscow deems “unfriendly.”
▫️ The bill was approved without any remarks, demonstrating the full consolidation of the russian regime around the idea of armed interference in the affairs of sovereign states under fabricated legal pretexts.
This initiative is further proof that russian aggression will not be limited to Ukraine. moscow is systematically building a legislative framework that effectively serves as a “legal justification” for future military invasions.
The kremlin is moving toward an open strategy of global coercion. Strengthening collective security and reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank remain the only effective responses to the threat posed by russia.
