Tanker wreck in Kerch Strait: Russian officials say fuel oil leak continues
It has been eight months since the accident involving russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, and the oil spill in the Black Sea is still ongoing — this has been officially confirmed by rosprirodnadzor during a court hearing. Later, the regulator hastily issued a “denial,” which, in fact, does not deny anything.
▫️A representative of rosprirodnadzor at the arbitration court of the krasnodar region of russia acknowledged that the fuel oil had been leaking from the tanker “volgoneft-212” throughout the entire observation period. This information is also confirmed by satellite images.
▫️Later, the press service of the agency released a news item with a “denial.” They stated that there are currently no “leaks detected.” However, the publication also mentioned that the remnants of the ship pose a constant environmental threat since they have still not been raised from the bottom.
The accident occurred back in December last year, and russian authorities have still taken no real steps to address its consequences. Monitoring of the tankers has simply stopped, while the fuel oil continues to destroy the nature of the Black Sea.
