According to US media, the Maduro regime is receiving Kh-31A supersonic anti-ship missiles from moscow. Even a limited number of launches reduces the air defense “response window” and increases risks for US ships in the Caribbean region.
The goal of these kremlin actions is to force Washington to disperse resources, showing that russian weapons can threaten where they are least expected. By transferring technology to states confronting the West, moscow creates a network of proxy deterrence and destabilization, where a local incident can quickly escalate into a major crisis.
This fits into the kremlin’s broader strategy of creating “flashpoints” from the Arctic to the Caribbean. The aim is to blur predictability in the international security system, undermine trust in US alliances, and impose a war of attrition.
