russia has stepped up disinformation campaigns to influence Germany’s elections
Ahead of the regional elections in Germany, russia has intensified disinformation operations aimed at destabilising the domestic political situation and undermining trust in democratic institutions.
▫️ According to German security services, these campaigns are coordinated from russia and are carried out primarily through social media. Fake content disguised as publications by reputable media outlets, including BBC and ARD, is being used to spread disinformation.
❗️ The objective of these disinformation efforts remains unchanged — to polarise society, undermine trust in democratic processes, and create favourable conditions for promoting political forces that are beneficial to the kremlin.
russia’s interference in the elections and political processes of democratic countries is systemic in nature. The Center previously reported that the russian Storm-1516 network, operated by russia’s military intelligence (gru), had interfered in at least seven election campaigns.
▫️ Information operations remain one of the key instruments of russia’s hybrid aggression against democratic states. Countering such threats is only possible through coordinated efforts by state institutions, the media, and society.
