Minerals deal with the US: what it means for Ukraine

Hostile propaganda is actively spreading manipulations regarding the minerals deal signed between Ukraine and the United States. In particular, narratives are being promoted claiming that Ukraine has supposedly been “sold,” and that in the future, our country will lose the ability to manage its own resources and will suffer major losses.

In reality, as stated by Ukraine’s Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko, the agreement clearly stipulates that all of Ukraine’s resources remain under Ukrainian ownership. The document provides for the creation of a U.S.-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund. This means that the United States has not “bought” Ukraine, but is investing in projects related to mineral extraction, oil and gas, as well as related infrastructure and processing.

As emphasized by Andrii Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation and officer of the Defense Forces, the signing of the minerals deal is a strategic step that opens new prospects for Ukraine’s security, technological development, and reconstruction.

“The agreement with the U.S. is about Ukraine’s future, its security, and technologies. And most importantly — it’s about the return of Ukrainians, including those who lost everything because of the war. Because it’s about rebuilding,” he said.
