How the occupiers are destroying the ecosystem of the Sea of Azov
Alarming reports of environmental degradation in the Azov, Sea continue to emerge from the occupied territories. A massive fish die-off has been recorded in occupied Mariupol, while hundreds of dead crabs have washed ashore near Kerch. This may be the result of fuel oil spills from russian tankers in the Kerch Strait.
▫️ The Sea of Azov, now entirely under russian control, is experiencing an environmental crisis. However, the occupying authorities are taking no environmental protection measures and are simply ignoring the problem. Meanwhile, propaganda attempts to portray this alarming situation as a “success.” For instance, propagandists boast about a record shrimp catch in the Sea of Azov. Yet the shrimp population increase is caused by rising water salinity — a change that, in the long term, signals the degradation of the sea’s unique ecosystem.
The destruction of the Sea of Azov’s environment is a continuation of the ecocide policy systematically carried out by the terrorist state of russia on Ukrainian territory during the war.
