russia’s loss of influence: Kazakhstan allows $1.4 billion recovery from gazprom for Ukraine

A court in Kazakhstan has authorized the enforcement of a $1.4 billion recovery from russian gazprom in favor of National Joint Stock Company Naftogaz of Ukraine, based on an international arbitration ruling.

▫️ This is the first public decision by a court in another country that gives the green light to the forced recovery of gazprom’s debt on its territory. It is highly symbolic that this precedent comes from Kazakhstan, a state long considered part of russia’s sphere of influence.

▫️ Astana is consistently taking systematic steps toward reducing its energy and economic dependence on moscow. In particular, the Kazakh government previously announced its intention to fully stop importing electricity from russia by 2027 and refused from joint construction with russia of three major thermal power plants.

While the kremlin continues its war of aggression against Ukraine, russia is rapidly losing its position in Central Asia. The Kazakh court’s decision regarding gazprom is another confirmation of this trend.
