Kazakhstan gradually moves away from the russian language
A draft of Kazakhstan’s new Constitution proposes revising the wording that defines the status of the russian language.
▫️ The sentence stating that the russian language is used “on an equal basis” with Kazakh is proposed to be replaced with the wording “alongside Kazakh.” Although the changes appear formal, they reflect Kazakhstan’s consistent policy of gradually reducing russia’s influence over its domestic affairs.
Kazakh is de facto becoming the country’s primary language. In public administration, education, and the public sphere, the use of Kazakh is increasingly prevailing over russian.
Following the launch of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kazakhstan has been distancing itself from russia not only in humanitarian matters. In December, Kazakhstan restricted russian nationals’ ability to launder funds and circumvent sanctions through Kazakh banks.
While the Kremlin remains focused on its war against Ukraine, russia continues to lose its positions in Central Asia.
