russian government is increasing internet censorship
The state duma is discussing a law that will equate so-called “destructive content” with extremism and allow roskomnadzor to block it through a simplified procedure.
▫️ This initiative is presented as one that will protect the population from dangerous content. However, the concept of “destructiveness” lacks clear criteria. This means that any content inconvenient for the authorities can be declared “harmful to the psyche” and blocked without a court, expert examination, or any transparent mechanism. If the law is passed, russians may even lose the ability to search the internet for information on topics “undesirable” to the authorities.
russia is doing everything to achieve full control over the internet, which worldwide remains a space of free thought. The kremlin is working simultaneously in two directions: through repression, it forces those who create inconvenient content to be silent, and through censorship and blocking, it deprives citizens of the opportunity to even read it. Under the pretext of “protection,” russia has set a course for total digital isolation of the population.
