Global South is rescuing its citizens from Kremlin recruitment
The South African government announced that it received requests for help from 17 citizens who were lured into mercenary work under the guise of “profitable contracts.” On November 2, in Delhi, the capital of India, a protest was held by families whose relatives were deceitfully recruited into the russian army — they demanded the return of their loved ones and punishment for the recruiters.
Meanwhile, Kenyan police uncovered a human trafficking network involved in recruiting people “for work in russia,” which in reality was sending them to the front lines, thus saving more than 20 people.
russia is systematically building transnational channels for hiring “cannon fodder” and forced labor, exploiting unemployment and the vulnerability of citizens in various countries of the Global South. This poses a threat to human rights and international security.
The Center previously reported that the kremlin disguises global recruitment as “employment” and “cooperation with security agencies,” deploying hybrid networks for the war against Ukraine.
